Orange and T-Mobile 3G upgrade in final stages - Know Your Mobile

Orange and T-Mobile 3G upgrade in final stages - Know Your Mobile

Everything Everywhere, parent company of UK networks Orange and T-Mobile, is getting ready to finalise its ‘big switch on' for an upgraded 3G network infrastructure.

The idea is that customers on said networks will be able to access 3G connectivity in more places than before, regardless of how they choose to connect.

A big part of this is an upgrade to the network switching - for a while now customers of either network have been able to share the spectrum of the other partner network but it can be somewhat temperamental.

Now it's supposed to be much more fluid thanks to Everything Everywhere's (EE) Smart Signal Share, which will take care of everything automatically. It'll also switch between 2G and 3G automatically depending on what signal is available.

The company has ensured that call charges and data rates will remain consistent for customers switching between network signals. It's nice that things will now run smoother but we're actually more excited about the idea of wider coverage if we're honest, with this writer speaking as an Orange customer.

At the very least, this is all part of the step towards the big 4G changeover expected sometime this year or early next, depending on when UK networks can start bidding for their share of spectrum.
