Apple backs Microsoft in opposition of Xbox ban attempt - CVG Online

Apple backs Microsoft in opposition of Xbox ban attempt - CVG Online

Apple has joined the growing list of companies opposing Motorola Mobility's request to ban imports of Xbox 360s to the US and cease sales of the console.

Along with Apple, Nokia, Intel, HP and Cisco have contacted the International Trade Commission asking it not to rule in Motorola's favour.

Motorola claims the Xbox 360 infringes on five of the telecommunications company's patents related to "secure wireless communication and transmission of video content between controller devices and game consoles".

In April an ITC judge agreed that Microsoft's hardware violates four Motorola patents and recommended that the commission ban the 4GB and 250GB versions of the Xbox console. However, a final decision is still pending.

Mark Davis, an attorney representing Apple, wrote to the ITC saying that Motorola initially committed to license patents under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms (FRAND), but is now ignoring those requirements to sue Microsoft.

"Apple respectfully submits that any exclusion order directed against Microsoft would significantly undermine the standards-setting process and frustrate the purpose of FRAND," said Davis.

Yesterday Activision Blizzard also lined up behind Microsoft.

Free Wi-Fi at every Debenhams thanks to O2 - Itproportal

O2 is set to roll out free Wi-Fi at Debenhams stores across the country, with all 167 UK branches of the international chain set to benefit from the arrival of in-store broadband.

The partnership is a way for O2 to make inroads into the lucrative world of high street shopping, while for the retailer it is a way to expand and enhance its existing customer experience through an improved, fully connected app.

Punters at the popular store will be able to expedite their shopping experience by instantly checking for the availability of sizes and colours by scanning a barcode, as opposed to waiting for sales assistants to venture into the storeroom.

Customers wishing to purchase unavailable products will be directed to Debenhams online ordering portal, in addition to being offered in-store alternatives. The improved app will also feature a shop layout guide to help goods be located with greater ease as well as a discount voucher feature.

"We are delighted to add Debenhams to our growing portfolio. [We have] realised the power of using in-store connectivity as a basis to bring innovative services to customers. This marks a continuation of our fresh thinking that has seen the rapid growth of O2 Wi-Fi," said O2 Wi-Fi manager director Gavin Frank.

The introduction of free Wi-Fi comes following a trial run in three Debenhams' stores and on the back of the launch of O2's NFC-based Wallet service and at a time when full Wi-Fi connectivity is being introduced in a number of strategic locations.

iOS 6 jailbreak hacks new Apple software a day after release - Crave

iOS 6 was only revealed on Monday -- and hackers have already cracked it. The first jailbreak of the new software for iPhone and iPad has been revealed, although it's still pretty limited.

iOS 6 isn't available to the public yet, but has been offered in beta to developers to build and test their apps -- or jailbreak faster than Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage. Hacker MuscleNerd claims to have jailbroken a fourth-generation iPod touch with iOS 6 on board.

It's only a tethered jailbreak at the moment, meaning it needs to still be plugged into a computer. But it seems it won't be long before iOS 6 gets a proper jailbreak, meaning you'll eventually be able to jailbreak your updated phone or iPad, and load it with unofficial apps from Cydia or just tinker under the bonnet.

iOS 6 was unveiled this week, packed with new features and apps. As well as a new own-brand Apple Maps app replacing Google Maps and expanded Siri, there's Facebook integration, a new-look phone app and new email filters. Check out our iOS 6 screenshot round up of Maps, Passbook and Tap to Tweet, find out what Siri can do in the UK and find out which iOS 6 features won't work on your iPhone or iPad.

The new software is set to be available this autumn, which hints at the launch date for the next iPhone, whether it's called the iPhone 5, new iPhone or who knows what. Although hackers have all summer to play with iOS 6, Apple also has plenty of time to tighten up security and check behind the Racquel Welch poster.

Have you jailbroken your iPhone? What are the advantages or disadvantages? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
