Dalriada on the ball to promote 3G pitch and IFA coaching project - ballymoneytimes.co.uk

Dalriada School got on the ball last week to encourage primary school teams to use its new high-tech 3G pitch.

A mini soccer tournament was held at the school on Thursday (7 June) involving teams from Dalriada Prep, the Model and St Brigid’s PS.

It was originally planned to hold the event on the 3G pitch but organisers were forced indoors due to the wet weather.

The competition was also used to announce the news that the IFA has teamed up with Dalriada School to deliver a new soccer coaching course for adults.

Ian Getty, football co-ordinator at the school, said the pitch provides an excellent arena for all primary schools in the greater Ballymoney area to hone their skills over a number of sports.

He said: “We are delighted with our new 3G pitch and have a number of initiatives to kick into place in the new term. The idea was to soft land the fact that we have a 3G pitch for primary schools in the area.”

The 70m x 40m pitch can be used by primary schools as part of their lessons or after-school activities.

The flood-lit facility will also accommodate the rise in popularity of soccer at Dalriada.

Ten years ago the school only had two teams but now has 10. Dalriada also employs a number of coaches, including Ballymoney United manager Paul Gaston who helped run Thursday’s tournament.

Sport Northern Ireland provided £245,000 in funding towards the development of the training pitch.

Schools and clubs playing soccer, gaelic and rugby can book the facility by calling Dalriada School on 27663066.

Meanwhile, IFA coach Wesley Gregg said he was delighted to form a new partnership with Dalriada which will see him use the school as a coaching centre.

He said: “As IFA Development officer for Ballymena, Ballymoney & Moyle council areas I wanted a base for delivering coach education programmes in the area and through meetings arranged by Ian Getty, who would be football co-ordinator at the school; Tom Skelton, headmaster; and recently Tom Morrison, who originally assisted in the application for the funding for the new 3G facility from Sport NI, we are now in a position to deliver Level 1 coaching football awards in Dalriada.

“Having worked closely with local clubs such as Ballymoney youth academy and observing the quality of work their coaches and co-ordinators deliver, it is important that we support that work, and I feel with the new facility at Dalriada and partnerships created between Dalriada, local council, football clubs and the IFA it would greatly enhance the work that they do in developing the game in the local area.”

The IFA Level One Coaching Award has now replaced the Junior Team Managers (JTM) Award, and qualifies you to coach children and young people (6 – 16) under the supervision of a more qualified football coach. The Junior Team Managers’ / Teachers’ Awards will continue to be valid until 5 years after completion.

O2 WiFi Bring FREE Wireless Internet to 167 Debenhams UK Shops - ISPReview UK

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has signed a new deal with high street retail giant Debenhams, which will see the operators free wireless internet service being rolled out across the groups 167 shops and giving it the “largest wifi coverage of any department store in the UK“.

O2 suggests that the move will have a “dramatic effect on how people buy products in stores“, with related customers now being able to review products, view store layouts, arrange special delivers or check clothing sizes and availability without having to ask an assistant and much more.

Gavin Franks, MD of O2 Wifi, said:

O2 Wifi has announced partnerships with leading brands in 2012. We are delighted to add Debenhams to our growing portfolio. Debenhams have realised the power of using in-store connectivity as a basis to bring innovative services to customers. We’re delighted that we are consistently being chosen as a partner by premium brands such as Debenhams. This marks a continuation of our fresh thinking that has seen the rapid growth of O2 Wifi.”

The service is already being rolled out following a “very successful” trial in three Debenhams stores earlier this year, which revealed that 20% of the retailer’s online traffic now comes from mobile devices.

Customers only need register to O2 Wifi once, which is available to everybody with a wifi capable device, and they will then be automatically connected whenever they are in range.

Motorola Launches MOTOSMART MIX XT553 in China - Softpedia
In addition to the previously mentioned RAZR V XT889 smartphone, Motorola announced another handset for China Telecom’s network today, the MOTOSMART MIX XT553.

While not as impressive as the 4.3-inch Android smartphone, the MOTOSMART MIX XT553 still has a lot of features to offer to those who choose to purchase it.

For starters, we should mention that it is being launched as a CDMA/GSM dual-mode/dual-standby smartphone, so that users could carry with them more than a single number.

“MOTOSMART MIX XT553 is the perfect phone for young people; giving you all the features you want without having to switch numbers,” Frank Meng, senior vice president and president of Greater China, Motorola Mobility, stated.

Made available at the wireless carrier today, the handset also comes with various music features, which should make enthusiasts happy.

“Rock your favorite hits with the MOTOSMART MIX XT553, a CDMA/GSM dual-mode/dual-standby music smartphone. With the e-Surfing iMusic and Sina Micro Music applications, you can easily enjoy and share the hottest music,” Motorola notes.

The smartphone also features a large 4.0-inch touchscreen display, as well as a long-lasting 1735mAh battery, which should deliver extended music playback times.

It also arrives on shelves with dedicated music keys, which will enable users to control their music without having to unlock the phone’s screen for that.

Moreover, it was packed with a series of social networking capabilities, so that users could share their current music in real time with Weibo followers, all through an exclusive Sina Micro Music application.

MOTOSMART MIX XT553 also sports the iMusic application from China Telecom, which enables users to easily find and download the hottest music out there.

The smartphone was built with rounded edges and features a sleek design and poppy-red accents on white or black colors. According to Motorola, these different shades of color should make the phone look cool at all times.

Motorola outs ICS running RAZR V XT889 for China - Phones Review

Many smartphone manufacturers see China as one of their top targets with regards to increasing sales volumes of their products, and the country is rapidly expanding its smartphone range with the likes of Apple making a big push into the country, and today we have news of the Android ICS running Motorola RAZR V XT889 outed for China

The handset manufacturer has just announced two new Android smartphones for the region and as SlashGear are reporting the RAZR V XT889 is the more capable of the two devices. The RAZR V XT889 comes with a 4.3-inch display and runs the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, and it also features an eight megapixel camera that is packed into a Kevlar body, which has also been given some treatment to make it splash and spill resistant.

Unlike the other RAZR’s that Motorola has released so far, the RAZR V XT889 is similar to the Galaxy Nexus that features buttons positioned on the screen instead of physicals keys located underneath it. The handset will also feature the Motorola Android overlay, a front facing camera, and a stylish sleek design.

Meanwhile the company has announced a cheaper handset in the form of the MOTOSMART MIX XT553, which offers both GSM and EVDO network support. This comes with a 4.0-inch screen and a 1,735 mAh battery unit, and the handset features dedicated music control keys along with an exclusive Sina Micro application for users to share listening habits with the Chinese social network.

Both the MOTOSMART MIX XT553 and Motorola RAZR V XT889 will be released on the China Telecom network from today, but there is currently no information whether either of these handsets will launch in other regions around the world. The full press release for the devices can be seen here.

Apple-Motorola patent lawsuit revived by US judge - Times of India
A US judge has agreed to hear Apple's request for an injunction against the sale of some Motorola phones, giving the iPhone maker a chance to head off a damaging ruling in the smartphone patent wars.

Last week Judge Richard Posner in Chicago canceled a trial between Google's Motorola Mobility unit and Apple, saying in a tentative ruling that neither could prove damages. But in an order on Wednesday, Posner decided to let attorneys plead their case on an injunction before he makes a final decision.

Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet declined to comment, while Google representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Motorola sued Apple in October 2010, a move that was widely seen as a preemptive strike against an imminent Apple lawsuit. Apple filed its own claims against Motorola the same month.

Posner issued a series of pretrial rulings that eliminated nearly all of Motorola's patent claims against Apple from the prospective trial, while maintaining more of Apple's claims against Motorola. That meant Apple had more to gain in the trial, which had been set to start on Monday.

Apple had sought an injunction barring the sale of Motorola products, but in last week's ruling cancelling the trial, Posner said an injunction would be "contrary to the public interest." One legal observer has said Posner's decision had a good chance of getting overturned on appeal, in part because the judge had rejected Apple's request for a hearing.

Posner set the injunction hearing for June 20 in Chicago. Motorola may also ask for an injunction on the one patent in the case that it can still assert against Apple.

The case in US District Court, Northern District of Illinois, is Apple and NeXT Software vs Motorola Inc and Motorola Mobility Inc, 11-cv-8540.
