Telecom facilities to be raised in northeast to spur growth - in.news.yahoo.com

Shillong, June 18 (IANS) The central government has decided to upgrade telecommunications facilities in insurgency-hit and border areas in India's northeastern states with a focus on all-round economic development of the region.

"A core IT (Information and Technology) infrastructure has been established in all the states for a smooth roll out of the delivery of citizen-centric services," Minister of State for Communication and Technology Sachin Pilot said here Monday.

Pilot reviewed the progress of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) schemes, telecommunication and postal services in the region.

The meeting was attended by IT ministers from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, besides chief secretaries and IT secretaries from the region and senior central government officials.

Pilot said the union cabinet recently sanctioned a Rs.388 crore special package for northeast to impart affordable ICT training to youths in the region, and, of the total sanctioned amount, Rs.63.35 crore would be spent this year.

Saying that the project would help train 14,000 youths per year, the minister hoped it would ensure the availability of trained professionals in the region to attract IT Industry to set up their units there.

The National Institute of E-Learning and Information Technology (NIELIT) will implement the project by upgrading the six existing NIELIT centres located at Imphal (Manipur), Aizawl (Mizoram), Guwahati (Assam), Shillong (Meghalaya), Gangtok (Sikkim) and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Pilot said.

Ten new extension centres would also be set up at Senapati and Churachandpur in Manipur; Dibrugarh, Silchar, Jorhat and Kokrajhar in Assam; Lunglei in Mizoram; Tura in Meghalaya; Tezu and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.

The two existing extension centres located at Chuchuyimlang in Nagaland and Tezpur in Assam will be upgraded.

Pilot also reviewed the implementation of central government's flagship scheme National e-Governance Plan and directed all agencies involved in it to resolve the pending issues.

The total expenditure planned for the northeastern states is about Rs.243 crore this year, of which Rs.190 crore would be spent on e-governance, the minister of state said. He requested the state governments to fully utilise this amount.

Pilot also unveiled a special training project for the government officials from all levels.

"A specific component of the funds, about Rs.1 crore, would be allocated for northeastern states. It is over and above the Rs.1.06 crore fund available for the region under the regular capacity building budget," he said.

Emphasising the importance of connectivity, Pilot said, "An ambitious plan in this regard is under consideration of the government and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.) plans a capital expenditure of Rs.347 crore in the region," he said.

He said a special unit entrusted with execution of projects would be given Rs.142.93 crore, besides Rs.300 crore that would be spent on National Optical Fibre Network and other projects.

Pilot also announced 50 more post offices for the region under the Department of Post's prestigious Project Arrow.

(Photo: Twitter) - Motorola Droid Razr Maxx Android 4.0 ICS Upgrade, Verizon Says Spam

On Monday morning, Verizon wrote on the Twitter account of its support page that the company is not aware of sending such text and the ones who received the texts should report it as spam.

“We are not aware of any texts being sent about ICS update. I suggest they report it to spam by forwarding the text to 7726. ^TH,” Verizon twitted.

Last week, people have reported to receive a text message regarding its Android operating system.

“Free Verizon Message: Your phone will soon be upgraded to Android 4.0. At that time we will remove your Verizon Wireless Mobile IM app because it is not supported in Android 4.0. Please download a new instant messaging app to use IM on your phone. Thank you for using Mobile IM!”

Earlier this year, Motorola announced to roll out the Android 4.0 ICS for Droid Razr Maxx in the second quarter. Since the end of Q2 is only two weeks away, the roll out is expected to happen soon from Motorola.

However it is not confirmed when Verizon will implement the change. It could be shortly after Motorola rolls out, or it could be at a much later date.

The update to new Android OS will bring more features to one of the hottest selling smartphones from Verizon. ICS will allow finger-slide notification clearance, Google+ integration, better camera user interface, and take still shots while recording HD video.

Motorola slider Sprint bound spotted with Android ICS - Phones Review

We get quite used to seeing various leaks leading up to the release of the next version of the Apple iPhone, and we also saw a similar situation leading up to the recent launch of the latest Android flagship smartphone from Samsung, but that is not to say other lower end handsets don’t regularly get leaked. Today we have news of a Motorola QWERTY slider that is bound for Sprint being leaked seemingly running Android ICS 4.0.

Only last week we told you about an upcoming QWERTY slider device by Samsung that was heading to T-Mobile, and now as Android Central are reporting a handset is currently in the works that also features a QWERTY slider keyboard, and is heading to rival carrier Sprint via Motorola. The image that can be seen below is all that is basically known about the handset at this present time.

What can be seen though is that there is a keyboard with five rows of staggered keys, and dedicated arrow buttons. It is also believed that the upcoming handset will feature a qHD display, and it can be seen there is the Sprint Music app pre-installed.

Of course while the list of specifications for the handset is remaining thin on the ground everything else is just guess work. There is a good chance the device will be LTE compatible, and it is wondered if the handset will finally see a device from Motorola that is powered by Intel. The two companies back at the beginning of the year announced they would provide a number of handsets due for release this coming fall.

It can also be seen in the image that apart from the QWERTY keyboard, there are no other physical keys so it will use virtual buttons on the screen for home and multitasking, which is a different move that we have seen recently from the likes of Samsung and LG. This hints that the device will be using the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system at launch, and is the way that Google originally wanted for its new software when it was first announced.

Are you a Sprint customer who likes the idea of a physical keyboard?
