The owner of Orange and T-Mobile unveiled a £50m investment plan that will help customers know their BlackBerries and their Apples.
A new development academy will train up to 12,000 staff, ensuring stores and call centres have experts dedicated to specific devices and their operating systems, such as Apple iOS, BlackBerry, Android and Windows phones.
Everything Everywhere, which has a combined customer base of 27 million, said the move represented a "fundamental shift" in how mobile phones are sold by redesigning its customer service around handset operating systems.
Its investment plan aims to make staff experts in "all aspects of customers' digital lives" and has been sparked by the explosion in demand for smartphones.
Customer service staff will also be trained to answer other enquiries, such as billing without having to transfer customers between departments.
Chief customer officer Jackie O'Leary said: "It is our goal to create the best customer experience in the UK, so that customers can trust us with their digital lives."
The company, formed in 2010 by the merger of T-Mobile and Orange, is also refreshing and modernising its high street store estate.
It has already announced it will start selling both T-Mobile and Orange products across all of its stores. Earlier this year it started selling pre-pay T-Mobile dongles in Orange stores, and Orange broadband will be available in T-Mobile stores from this week.
Everything is spending more than £1.5bn over the next three years in bringing faster and more reliable coverage to its customers amid the boom in smartphones.

Apple’s new iPad cleared for 3G use in China - UberGizmo (blog)
If you’re living in China, you might be in for a treat as Apple’s new iPad with 3G capabilites could be officially going on sale soon. This comes from reports via the Wall Street Journal that China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center has provided Apple with a mandatory license for a 3G compatible device, leading them to believe that it could be for none other than the new iPad. For those wondering, the WiFi version of the iPad is currently available although for those looking to hook onto cellular networks via 3G are still waiting for the 3G compatible version, although that wait could be ending soon.
Unfortunately for those hoping for an LTE version, due to the lack of established LTE networks in China, the fastest speeds that these iPads will be able to obtain on a carrier’s network in China will most likely be limited to 3G. We have to admit that this clearance is slightly odd given Apple’s current legal battle with Proview over the iPad trademark, but either way if you’re looking forward to the 3G iPad in China, China Unicom (the official iPad carrier) will most likely be the carrier you’ll want to head to in order to get your hands on the tablet.

Study: AT&T has fastest 3G, Verizon more consistent - Electronista
Sprint found to be worst 3G performer in all cities measured
A study suggests that AT&T has the fastest 3G network but lacks consistency in connection speed, reports CNN Money. Data from the CarrierCompare app (free, App Store) found the connection offered by Verizon, although half the speed of AT&T, to be far more consistent throughout the day. Sprint appeared to be the slowest of the three carriers, however it had the most consistency in the tests.
AT&T had the highest speed in all the tested cities, however performance was found to be wildly inconsistent depending on the time of day, with network congestion in the afternoons causing what CNN Money dubs a crapshoot. AT&T runs an HSPA+ network, an enhanced 3G service it calls 4Gnot to be confused with 4G LTE.
In five of the six cities Verizon was the second fastest carrier, losing out to Sprint in New York. Speeds were found to be between 50 and 72 percent of AT&T measurements, but network speed was more consistent over the day with less variance on a per-hour basis. Verizon was also seen to have the quickest network response time, being twice as quick as AT&T, which is said to combine with consistency to make the network appear quicker.
Sprint had the slowest measured speeds of the three carriers, barely beating Verizon in New York. In that city, it managed to reach three-quarters of AT&Ts speed, but overall managed only a third. Response times were seen to be slow, taking three times as long to commence page loading, and network lag was seen to be the worst in all of the cities. Sprint did have the most consistent experience, however.
SwayMarkets, creators of the CarrierCompare app, collected up to 40,000 data points in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington DC. Care was taken to ensure representative sampling over both location and time according to Amos Epstein, co-founder of the Boston-based startup, adding that all the data was crowdsourced and therefore more indicative of customer's actual experience with their phones.
