Unicom Leads Mobile Carriers Tumble on 3G Users: China Overnight - Bloomberg
China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (CHU) led a drop in the nation’s biggest wireless carriers traded in the U.S. after data showed third-generation service users grew in May at the slowest pace in eight months.
The Bloomberg China-US Equity Index (CH55BN) of the most-traded Chinese companies in New York fell 0.9 percent, the most since June 1, to 93.20 yesterday in New York. China Unicom, the country’s second-largest operator of wireless networks, dropped the most in four months while China Mobile Ltd. (941), the biggest, declined for the first time in four days. China Telecom Corp., the smallest one among the three, snapped a seven-day rally.
China Unicom added 2.73 million users for its 3G service last month, down from 2.92 million new customers in April and the lowest monthly gain since September, according to a June 19 filing. China Mobile gained 2.39 million subscribers in May, after adding 2.31 million a month earlier. China’s economy expanded 8.1 percent in the January-March period, the slowest pace in 11 quarters, as the debt crisis in Europe and slower growth in the U.S. curbed demand for exports.
“The slowdown in 3G customer growth is a reflection of the general economic slowdown in China in the second quarter,” Michael Ding, who helps manage $1.5 billion at U.S. Global Investors Inc., said by phone yesterday from San Antonio, Texas. “3G subscribers are mostly white-collar employees, so when there’s less exports, fewer housing starts, less corporate spending, these people feel poorer and don’t choose to get a new phone.”
China ETF Declines
The iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (FXI), the biggest U.S.- listed China exchange-traded fund, lost 0.3 percent to $33.94, snapping a six-day rally. The Shanghai Composite Index of mainland stocks dropped 0.3 percent to a one-week low of 2,292.88. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slid 0.2 percent to 1,355.69 after the Federal Reserve cut estimates for economic growth as Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said progress in the job market has slowed and access to credit remains a major issue.
American depositary receipts of China Unicom, based in Beijing, slid 4.8 percent to $13.35, the steepest drop since Feb. 6. The ADRs, each representing 10 underlying shares in the company, traded 0.4 percent below the Hong Kong stock, the first discount in three days.
Unicom will introduce smartphones costing less than 700 yuan ($110) in China in the near future, 30 percent less than the cheapest devices it currently offers, President Lu Yimin told the GSMA Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai yesterday, without providing a more specific time frame. The company currently offers handsets from Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. costing less than 1,000 yuan apiece.
Network Trials
China Mobile’s ADRs lost 0.8 percent to $52.96 after gaining in the previous three days. The company’s ongoing trial of fourth-generation TD-LTE network equipment is going smoothly and it has uncovered no issues with the technology, Chairman Xi Guohua said at the Shanghai meeting yesterday. The biggest bottleneck for adoption of the new standard is the devices’ abilities, he said.
China Mobile had a total of 64.3 million 3G users by the end of May, data on its website showed. That compared with 54.5 million at Unicom.
China Telecom’s ADRs sank 2.4 percent to $45.56. The ADRs traded 0.7 percent higher than the Hong Kong stock, the widest premium since June 7. Each ADR is equal to 100 underlying shares.
Baidu, Melco Crown
Baidu Inc. (BIDU), the biggest online search engine in China, dropped 3.6 percent, the most in two weeks, to $117.38. Shanda Games Ltd. (GAME), the third-biggest online games operator in China, sank 5 percent to $4.14, the steepest slide since April 4.
Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. (MPEL), a Macau casino operator, rose to a three-week high in New York after Sterne Agee & Leach Equity Research said a new resort will resume construction in 45 days. Melco’s ADRs added 3.2 percent to $12.28 in New York for a fourth day of gains.
Construction of Melco’s Studio City Macau resort will resume in about 45 days and begin operations within three years, Sterne Agee analyst David Bain said in a report yesterday, without citing a source for the information. Melco is better positioned than its competitors to take advantage of the expansion of Macau’s increasingly popular Cotai Strip, he said.
China’s preliminary data for the June purchasing managers’ index (SHCOMP) is scheduled to be released today by HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics. The final reading of the manufacturing gauge contracted for a seventh straight month in May.
‘Too Cautious’
“The sentiment is pretty low right now,” Kevin Shacknofsky, who helps manage about $5 billion for Alpine Mutual Funds in Purchase, New Work, said by phone yesterday. “Chinese policy makers really need to do something to help the economy rebound. They’ve been too cautious and they should be aggressive right now.”
China’s central bank cut interest rates on June 7 for the first time since 2008 and has lowered the required-reserve requirement ratio for banks three times since November to spur lending. The finance ministry extended subsidies to buyers of energy-saving home appliances this month.
China plans to raise the stock investment allocation allowed for qualified foreign institutional investors to 30 percent, from the existing 20 percent, China National Radio reported yesterday, citing a statement from the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

Apple aims to reopen patent fight against Google's Motorola - The Guardian
Apple will try to salvage a high-profile lawsuit against Google's Motorola Mobility unit on Wednesday at a crucial hearing in the smartphone patent wars between the two technology companies.
Sitting in Chicago, federal judge Richard Posner will hear Apple argue that it should be able to seek an order barring the sale of some Motorola phones. Posner's decision could affect the iPhone maker's ability to negotiate favourable licensing agreements in its legal fights against Motorola and other competitors including Samsung and HTC.
Apple has waged an international patent war since spring 2010, part of its attempt to either limit the growth of Google's Android or to restrict the number of iPhone-like features that it offers. So far it has had little effect; Android has gone in that time from around 100,000 phones being activated every day to more than 900,000 a day, and from less than 8m devices in use worldwide to more than 390m. Opponents of Apple, meanwhile, say it is using patents too aggressively in its bid to stamp out competition.
Motorola was first to move, suing Apple in October 2010, a move widely seen as a pre-emptive strike. Apple filed its own claims against Motorola the same month. Among the patents being asserted are some originally filed by NeXT Computer, the company set up by the late Steve Jobs which was then bought by Apple in 1996.
Posner issued a series of pretrial rulings that eliminated nearly all of Motorola's patent claims against Apple, while maintaining more of Apple's claims against Motorola. That meant Apple had more to gain at the trial, which had been set to start last week.
But earlier this month Posner cancelled the trial, saying in a tentative ruling that neither side could prove damages. An injunction would be "contrary to the public interest," he wrote.
Last week however Posner granted Apple's request for a hearing on a possible injunction, and ordered both sides to submit legal arguments in advance. Those documents were filed under seal on Monday.
Motorola may also ask for an injunction on the one patent in the case that it can still assert against Apple.
A clear victory in one of the US legal cases could strengthen Apple's hand in negotiating cross-licensing deals, where companies agree to let each other use their patented technologies, or to apply for bans on sales or changes to how devices which infringe its patents function.
So far, though, Apple has shown little inclination to license its patents to Android device makers, although it signed a Apple cross-licensing deal with Finland's Nokia in June 2011 in an out-of-court settlement after a protracted battle between the two over patents.
By contrast Microsoft has persuaded a number of Android handset manufacturers to sign cross-licensing deals which in effect mean that it gets paid a stipend every time one of the handsets is shipped.
Apple and Samsung are scheduled for trial on 30 July in federal court in San Jose, California.

Google Nexus 7 tablet won't have 3G or camera, rumours say - Crave
More details have trickled out about the hotly tipped Google tablet, the Nexus 7. The 7-inch Android tablet will be the first to show off Jelly Bean, and now sources say it won't have a main camera or 3G. Can the Google Nexus 7 face up to the iPad or the new Microsoft Surface and Microsoft Surface Pro?
In order to keep the cost down to the rumoured $200 (£125), it seems Google and tablet manufacturer Asus plan to only offer Wi-Fi for connecting to the web, with no 3G option.
Industry watcher DigiTimes reports that component suppliers for the Nexus 7 also say there's no main camera -- just a lower-resolution front-facing camera for video calls.
Perhaps it's this camera that captured two photos posted to Google's online photo-sharing service Picasa, which claim to have been captured by a device called Nexus 7. The 1,280x960-pixel snaps are of the ceiling in 'Google Building 44', according to the attached geotagging metadata. One has since been deleted.
It's a tough market the Nexus 7 enters: making Android tablets is a hard row to hoe. None of them have come close to toppling the iPad as the most popular slate. Things are so tough, LG is giving up on tablets entirely to focus on phones.
And things got even tougher today with the announcement of the Microsoft Surface and Microsoft Surface Pro, flagship Windows 8 tablets that introduce the world to the next generation of the software that runs most of the world's homes and offices -- and by the end of this year will power tablets too.
The Nexus 7 will not only have to contend with the apparently invincible marketing of the iPad, but also with the widespread brand recognition of Windows. In fact, this is turning into a three-way head-to-head battle of the brands between Apple, Microsoft and Google, with the latter two putting their own names on the hardware for the first time. Who will win?
It's a safe bet that the Nexus 7 will take a bow at Google I/O, the annual Android developer event on 27 June in San Francisco. Keep it CNET for all the news and speculation in the run-up to the Nexus 7's public debut, as well as videos, previews and first impressions when it does become official.
Are you looking forward to the Google Nexus 7? Has the Microsoft Surface raised the bar for Android tablets? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
Microsoft demurs at Motorola patent settlement offer - Reuters
SEATTLE, June 20 |
SEATTLE, June 20 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp has brushed off an offer by Motorola, the phone maker bought by Google Inc, to settle patent disputes with Motorola that are threatening to halt imports of Android devices and Xbox game consoles into the United States.
The patents at issue relate to Microsoft technology called ActiveSync, which updates calendars automatically on some Android phones. Microsoft is demanding royalties from all companies using Google's Android system in their devices, and has settled with most major manufacturers except Motorola.
is demanding royalties on some of its own video and wireless technology used in Microsoft's Xbox game console and the Windows operating system.
"While we welcome any good faith settlement effort, it's hard to apply that label to a demand that Microsoft pay royalties to Google far in excess of market rates, that refuses to license all the Microsoft patents infringed by Motorola, and that is promptly leaked to the press," said Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's deputy general counsel, in an e-mailed statement.
According to Microsoft, Motorola has offered to pay Microsoft 33 cents for each Android phone using ActiveSync, and asked for a royalty of 2.25 percent on each Xbox and 50 cents per copy of Windows for using its patents.
Last month the International Trade Commission recommended an import ban on infringing Android devices and Xbox consoles unless the patent issues were settled.
Representatives of Motorola and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Motorola Xoom 2 says buongiorno to Alitalia's cockpits and cabins (video) - engadget
Motorola Mobility Takes Motorola XOOM™ 2 to the Skies with Alitalia
ROME – June 19, 2012 – Today marks a unique opportunity between Motorola Mobility and the Italian airline Alitalia, which will revolutionize aircraft service and in-flight entertainment. Alitalia and Motorola Mobility have always been at the forefront in offering innovative technology solutions: Alitalia to flight assistants and customers and likewise Motorola Mobility to consumers. Today they anticipate that airlines will need more sophisticated technologies, focused on enhancing customer satisfaction.
Alitalia will be among the first airlines in the world to provide their crew with a tablet, Motorola XOOM™ 2, which will contain all relevant information on high value customers. This includes not only the profile of each passenger, but also their preferences in terms of the on-board menu, seating, travel history, as well as any inconveniences they experienced in the past. This will enable the staff to identify all the high value customers and to customise the service according to their needs.
Thanks to the wide range of programs and tools configured on each device and the ability to connect to the web, Alitalia staff will be able to receive updated information in real-time and perform all operations on board without having to print and carry, achieving great improvements in terms of time, efficiency and speed of updates. The flight attendants will also use the Motorola XOOM 2 to access the aircraft's internal manuals from the palm of their hands.
Motorola XOOM™ 2 tablets will also be introduced as Alitalia's in-flight entertainment services (IFE) for Business and Magnifica Class passengers on mid as well as long-distance flights to Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Tel Aviv, Beyruth, Riyadh and Teheran that are currently without an IFE service. Thanks to the tablets and the preloaded content, passengers will enjoy free access to a wide range of movies, music, online magazines and video games - all from Motorola XOOM 2's gorgeous 10.1-inch widescreen HD display.
But there is no need to be on the plane to take advantage of the Motorola XOOM 2. The Motorola XOOM 2 tablets will also be placed in 10 Alitalia lounges (Freccia Alata) so travelers can keep up to date on the latest news before embarking on their flights. A demo area within the Alitalia flagship store in Rome will provide useful suggestions to passengers on how to use the best technology of Motorola XOOM 2.
"Today we have made another further step ahead in our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) strategy" says Marco Sansavini, director of sales, Distribution and Customer Care in Alitalia. "It is a priority project for the new Alitalia, which involves the training of 9,000 people. Alitalia wants to make the onboard flight an extraordinary experience and the tablets will enable the crew to always stay online and in touch with the needs and preferences of its passengers. Alitalia will be one of the first airlines in the world that will use this innovative way to manage its clients. The tablet will also be used as a source of entertainment for passengers of six medium and long distance destinations and for the guests of our lounge rooms "Freccia Alata".
"With its cutting edge technology and host of entertainment features, Motorola XOOM 2 is the perfect travel companion for Alitalia passengers," said Maurizio Angelone, vice president and general manager, Mobile Devices, EMEA, Motorola Mobility. "Tablets have increasingly become a must-have device for staying connected, whether at home or on the go, and we anticipate the transportation industry will make tablets an integral part of their consumer offering in the years to come."
T-Mobile’s Cell-Tower Sale Is Said to Attract Bidders - Bloomberg
T-Mobile USA Inc. received a second round of bids for its cellular towers, attracting offers from companies such as American Tower Corp. (AMT) and Crown Castle International Corp. (CCI), a person with knowledge of the deal said.
The unit of Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE), which owns about 7,000 antenna towers in the U.S., has also received bids from private- equity firms, said the person, who asked not to be named because the discussions aren’t public. Selling the assets could raise about $2 billion, according to Kevin Smithen, an analyst with Macquarie Capital in New York.
Deutsche Telekom set out to sell T-Mobile USA’s towers after a failed takeover of the carrier by AT&T Inc. last year. The deal would help the company raise money for wireless spectrum and network enhancements, while allowing T-Mobile to rent back antenna space on the towers. The new owner could then use the assets to provide service to other carriers as well.
“I expect they will announce a winner in July and probably close the deal by September,” Smithen said.
Deutsche Telekom appointed the New York boutique bank TAP Advisors LLC to search for a tower buyer and raise cash, Bloomberg reported in March.
Cara Walker, a T-Mobile spokeswoman, and Philipp Kornstaedt, a Deutsche Telekom spokesman, declined to comment. American Tower and Crown Castle, two of the largest U.S. cellular-tower operators, didn’t respond to requests for comment.
AT&T Deal
AT&T (T)’s $39 billion bid for T-Mobile collapsed in December because of regulatory opposition. Even as it aims to offload the towers, T-Mobile’s German parent is stepping up investments in the division. Deutsche Telekom plans to boost U.S. network spending by $1.4 billion over two years in a race to upgrade equipment and bring faster connections to smartphones.
T-Mobile, based in Bellevue, Washington, is the only large U.S. carrier that doesn’t offer Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone. That’s put it at a disadvantage to its three larger rivals, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint Nextel Corp. (S)
T-Mobile lost 1.65 million contract customers last year, a slump that’s prompting it to make cutbacks. The company said last month that it plans to trim 900 jobs. It’s also eliminating 1,900 jobs by closing seven call centers.
Even so, T-Mobile benefited from a breakup agreement with AT&T following the merger’s collapse. The company received $3 billion in cash; wireless frequencies in cities such as Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Washington and San Francisco; and lower fees for calls into AT&T’s network.
