Dalriada on the ball to promote 3G pitch and IFA coaching project - ballymoneytimes.co.uk

Dalriada School got on the ball last week to encourage primary school teams to use its new high-tech 3G pitch.

A mini soccer tournament was held at the school on Thursday (7 June) involving teams from Dalriada Prep, the Model and St Brigid’s PS.

It was originally planned to hold the event on the 3G pitch but organisers were forced indoors due to the wet weather.

The competition was also used to announce the news that the IFA has teamed up with Dalriada School to deliver a new soccer coaching course for adults.

Ian Getty, football co-ordinator at the school, said the pitch provides an excellent arena for all primary schools in the greater Ballymoney area to hone their skills over a number of sports.

He said: “We are delighted with our new 3G pitch and have a number of initiatives to kick into place in the new term. The idea was to soft land the fact that we have a 3G pitch for primary schools in the area.”

The 70m x 40m pitch can be used by primary schools as part of their lessons or after-school activities.

The flood-lit facility will also accommodate the rise in popularity of soccer at Dalriada.

Ten years ago the school only had two teams but now has 10. Dalriada also employs a number of coaches, including Ballymoney United manager Paul Gaston who helped run Thursday’s tournament.

Sport Northern Ireland provided £245,000 in funding towards the development of the training pitch.

Schools and clubs playing soccer, gaelic and rugby can book the facility by calling Dalriada School on 27663066.

Meanwhile, IFA coach Wesley Gregg said he was delighted to form a new partnership with Dalriada which will see him use the school as a coaching centre.

He said: “As IFA Development officer for Ballymena, Ballymoney & Moyle council areas I wanted a base for delivering coach education programmes in the area and through meetings arranged by Ian Getty, who would be football co-ordinator at the school; Tom Skelton, headmaster; and recently Tom Morrison, who originally assisted in the application for the funding for the new 3G facility from Sport NI, we are now in a position to deliver Level 1 coaching football awards in Dalriada.

“Having worked closely with local clubs such as Ballymoney youth academy and observing the quality of work their coaches and co-ordinators deliver, it is important that we support that work, and I feel with the new facility at Dalriada and partnerships created between Dalriada, local council, football clubs and the IFA it would greatly enhance the work that they do in developing the game in the local area.”

The IFA Level One Coaching Award has now replaced the Junior Team Managers (JTM) Award, and qualifies you to coach children and young people (6 – 16) under the supervision of a more qualified football coach. The Junior Team Managers’ / Teachers’ Awards will continue to be valid until 5 years after completion.

Burger King to open 1,000 restaurants in China - BBC News

Fast-food giant Burger King has said it will open 1,000 restaurants in China over the next five to seven years.

The announcement comes after the group signed a joint venture agreement with the Kurdoglu family, which is already Burger King's largest franchisee, and private equity firm Cartesian Capital.

Burger King currently owns 63 outlets in China. Rival McDonald's owns 1,400.

Other fast-food groups are also looking to take advantage of China's rapidly-growing middle classes.

In April this year, Miami-based Burger King announced its intention to relist on the New York Stock Exchange after its owner, private equity group 3G Capital, agreed to sell a 29% stake in the company for $1.4bn (£890m) to UK-based investment vehicle Justice Holdings.

3G Capital, which bought Burger King for $3.26bn in September 2010, retains a 71% stake in the company.

Vodafone in the clear for UK tax bill - Computer Weekly

The National Audit Office (NAO) today ruled that Vodafone’s settlement of its UK tax bill was "reasonable", despite being almost £5bn less than it was originally thought to have owed.

The mobile operator came under scrutiny when critics claimed it owed £6bn in tax which it had avoided by having a one-man staff in a tax haven office based out of Luxembourg.

Despite going through the courts and Vodafone being ruled to owe the money to HMRC, it came to an arrangement with the treasury, including the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, to pay £1.25bn to settle the dispute – even less than the £2.2bn it admitted to keeping to one side for payment to the tax office.

This led to even more uproar, and a number of protests broke out across Britain, led by campaign group UK Uncut.

The NAO was asked to investigate the case in December last year, along with four other similar deals the treasury had struck, to make a conclusion over the validity of the deals and try to put an end to the controversy.

The investigation was carried out by former High Court tax judge Sir Andrew Park, whose report released today said the conclusion of all five cases was rational, but the process of reaching the deals needed to be re-examined.

Amyas Morse, head of the NAO, said: "On the basis of Sir Andrew Park’s reports, I conclude that the settlements reached by HMRC in these five cases were all reasonable. Moreover, in settling them, the department successfully resolved multiple, long-outstanding tax issues.

"However, our concerns over the processes by which the settlements were reached have been confirmed. It was not appropriate to set up governance arrangements specific to certain cases or to fail to apply processes correctly. Poor communication with staff also undermined confidence in the settlements."

Vodafone's chief financial officer, Andy Halford, praised the decision by the NAO, and said the company welcomed the vindication.

"For more than a year, Vodafone has been falsely accused of improper conduct," he said. "As we have consistently stated, those attacks were unwarranted and unjust. We acted with the utmost propriety throughout the HMRC settlement process, and the National Audit Office has now concluded that the outcome was good for the UK taxpayer.”

The company is not out of the woods yet, however, as this week it was revealed Vodafone had not paid any corporation tax in the UK during 2011.

The company followed legal processes by offsetting its capital expenditure against the tax bill, bringing the owed amount down to zero, but it has still received criticism, having made £1.3bn from its UK operations last year.

Sandra Hughes, member of UK Uncut – which led protests in 2010 against Vodafone – said the telecoms firm needed to start paying tax and help the country in times of austerity.

“There is an alternative to the government’s cuts – make big businesses pay their fair share of tax,” she said. “Mega-rich businesses must contribute more so that we can fund and keep open our libraries, hospitals and local services, and provide welfare for all.”
